Amalia R. Torres
Mrs. Amalia R. Torres, 96, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 10, 2018, at a local hospital surrounded by her loving family and in the presence of God.
Mrs. Torres was a wonderful caring mother and a loving and nurturing grandmother. Amalia was born in Laredo in January 22, 1922. Upon the death of her mother when she was a few months old, Amalia was raised in San Antonio by a fraternal aunt. She was very proud of having attended Our Lady of the Lake Elementary School. Her aunt died when she was twelve years old and she came back to Laredo to live with her father and step-mother. In 1946, Amalia married the love of her life and for 62 years, she was a devoted and beloved wife. Amalia spent her life caring for others. She loved to sew. Flowers and her garden remained her passion until the end. Amalia was a very good cook and her family fondly remembers her home made flour tortillas and her many tasty dishes. She also loved to listen to "Las Mananitas" and loved serenatas. To Amalia, her family was her life. The love she gave to her husband, her children and her granddaughters was beyond measure. She was also caring and considerate of others. Amalia was a faithful Catholic and her devotion to Jesus and the Virgen of Guadalupe (who she called her mother) sustained her and brought her inner peace and happiness. She was a life-long member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She loved her Church and remained aware of its services and activities. Amalia was also a benefactor of the Oblate missionaries and priests of Mary Immaculate. She was an exemplary role model to her children and granddaughters. Amalia touched many people with her kindness, wit, and good humor. She will be greatly missed by her family, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco O. Torres; parents, Amador and Herminia Ramirez; her fraternal Aunt Antonia R. Gonzalez; brothers, Porfirio Ramirez and Jose Ramirez; sister and brother-in-law, Otila and Reducindo Paez.
Amalia is survived by her children: Josefina Torres, Jose (Lizette) Torres, Berta Torres, and Fernando Torres; as well as her granddaughters whom she adored: Cristina Lizette (Hector) Gonzalez and Analee Torres. She is survived by a brother, Ramon (Josefina) Ramirez; a sister, Carmen Romano. Amalia is also survived by numerous other relatives and family friends.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge the nurses and staff of Laredo Medical Center 2C. They would especially want to thank Dr. Oscar Gutierrez-Vizuet and his office nurses and staff. They will be forever appreciative of the medical care Dr. Gutierrez-Vizuet provided for 10 years, but especially the compassion and concern he demonstrated.
