Obituary

ESPERANZA "HOPIE" DELGADILLO

Esperanza "Hopie" Delgadillo, age 92, of Laredo, Texas passed away on February 27, 2026.

Hopie was the heart and foundation of her family – both matriarch and patriarch – in strength, wisdom, and love.

With quiet resilience and unwavering devotion, she carried generations on her shoulders and held them together with grace.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, she found her greatest peace in John 3:16 – a promise of everlasting love that shaped the way she lived and the hope she held.

Her life was a living testament to faith lived boldly and love given freely.

Hopie was born in Bruni, Texas and lived most of her life in Laredo, Texas.

As a young woman, Hopie took on the role of head of household upon her father's passing while admirably helping to raise her nephews.

Hopie was a renowned cook for Mercy Hospital as well as for her dear ones having spent her life hosting family gatherings and celebrations.  A day at her home meant delicious meals would be served with love.

Hopie was an avid learner.  She was a devoted student of the Bible and spirituality. As an adult, she even went to night school to earn her high school diploma.

Upon retiring, Hopie found joy in tending to her garden and in setting a table where everyone was welcome.  Her home was a place of warmth and laughter.

She loved nature and enjoyed sitting outdoors to view sunsets and sunrises.

She was nurturing, generous, and life-giving.

Anchored in the promise of eternal life, she lived with steady assurance and generous grace.

Though she now rests in the everlasting love she trusted all her life, the seeds she planted of faith, strength, and devotion will continue to bloom in the lives of those she loved so deeply.

Hopie was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Delgadillo and Maria Pascuala Delgadillo Cortez as well as her siblings – Jose Concepcion Delgadillo, Jesus Delgadillo, Ana Maria Barrow, and Mauro Delgadillo.

She leaves behind her nephews/sons – Robert (Julia) Barrow, Joseph Michael (Isabel) Barrow, John Thomas (Michelle) Barrow, her grandchildren – John Jay (Mayela) Barrow, Jennifer (Joe Charles) Barrow, Miranda (Daniel) Guerrero, and Nathan Sanchez.

She is also survived by siblings Consuelo Hernandez, Jose Guadalupe (Nena) Delgadillo, Maria Emma Rux, Daniel (Gloria) Delgadillo, Isabel Delgadillo, and her many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
