Obituary

Guadalupe Bermea Cruz January 26, 1907 - December 4, 2012 Close in our hearts you will always stay Loved and remembered every day Guadalupe Bermea Cruz passed peacefully in her Lord's care on December 4, 2012, after living a full and abundant life of 105 years. Mrs. Cruz known by her grandkids as "Welita" Lupe" was born on January 26, 1907 in Laredo. While her attributes were many, she is remembered for her love, charm and generosity. She was married to the late Felix Cruz and together they raised a considerable family. Both shared "community oriented" values and Welita supported her husband's generosity and their donation of land for building a church, a school, and playgrounds for community use; she saw their ranch grow into a neighborhood known by Laredoans as "El Barrio de las Cruzes" in the area around Cruz Field. She possessed a strong spirit for life, enough to overcome a diagnosis of breast cancer at the age of 90, and served as a spiritual guide and source of strength for many survivors. As a good Catholic, she prayed daily, was a member of San Luis Rey Catholic Church and formerly belonged to the Guadalupana Society. The matriarch of her large and loving family and a beloved and respected member of her community, she is noted for her courage and independence, her concern for others, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest. She is preceded in death by her parents, Igancio Bermea and Delfina Trevino Bermea, husband, Felix Cruz, and her twin brothers, Ramon and Francisco Bermea. She is survived by her loving children, Felix Cruz, Jr. (Angela), Manuel Cruz (Maria Luisa), and Maria Guadalupe San Miguel, and grandchildren, Vilma Pena, Felix Cruz, III, Griselda Alcantar, Raquel Chalambaga, Juan J. Cruz, Manuel C. Cruz, Jr., Leticia Cruz, Raymundo Cruz, Diana Cruz, Alberto Cruz, Sylvia Cruz, Irma Cruz, Edna Cruz, Juan Manuel San Miguel, Juan Antonio San Miguel, Victor San Miguel, Jr., Maria Angelica Ojeda, Adrian San Miguel, Esmeralda Lopez, more than 100 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren in addition to extended family. The family thanks all who blessed "Welita" with joy, love, and companionship, her physicians, Dr. A. Zuniga-Goldwater, Winder Vasquez, Octavio Guzman, and Gary Unzeitig and her home care assistants, South Texas Primary Care, Healing Hands, Estela Riojas, Carmen Cortez and Maria Tapia who cared for her daily and unconditionally. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and a Vigil of the Deceased will be held at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez-Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 departing from the funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. at San Luis Rey Catholic Church, Committal services and interment will then follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
