Obituary

Jose F. "Pepe" Hernández

Jose F. "Pepe" Hernández, age 94, long-time resident of Rosenberg, Texas passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at his home, after a long illness. His parents, his brothers Lazaro and Oscar Hernández, and his son, Jose F. Hernández II preceded him in death. Mr. Hernández was born in Saltillo, Coahuila, on February 5, 1923 to Lauro Hernández and Julia Nieto Hernández. At the age of six months, he moved with his parents to Laredo, Texas, where he spent his childhood. In 1944, while in high school, he was drafted into the Army. He was sworn in as a U.S. citizen on an Army transport boat going to the Pacific Theater of War. The casualty rate was extremely high. In a company of 300, only thirteen came back walking. Mr. Hernández attributed his survival to having been assigned the bazooka. When he was discharged he returned to Laredo's Martin High School and graduated in 1946. He then enrolled in the Landig School of Mortuary Science in Houston and graduated in 1947. He and Mrs. Hernández married in June 1947. After working some years in San Antonio the Hernandez moved to Rosenberg in April 1950 and established Hernández Funeral Home.

Mr. Hernández is survived by his loving wife, Maria de la Luz Hernández, his daughter, Terri Hernández Ramirez (husband Ray Ramirez); his grandson Gregory Tijerina and wife Gabriella; his granddaughter Belen Ferree and husband Ben; his great grandchildren Thomas Oliver and Penelope Tijerina; his sisters, Rosa Hernández Flores, Laura Hernández, and Irma Hernández, and his brother, Lauro Hernández. He is also survived by his nieces, Rosario Stanford, Cynthia Flores, Elsa Alvarez (Joe Alvarez), Gracie Rodriguez (Ramiro Rodriguez), Mary Ann Guerrero (Nash Guerrero), and Irene Salinas; His special caregivers and friends David Resendiz, Eva Alcorta, Judy Cavazos and James Rudel.

Visitation is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday May 20, 2017 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 1600 Avenue D in Rosenberg. Rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Funeral Mass scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Father Lee Flores officiating.

A Military Graveside Services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday May 22, 2017 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery 3600 McPherson Ave. in Laredo, Texas. Deacon Hector Hernandez Nephew of Mr. Hernandez officiating.
