Obituary

JOE MORENO JR. Joe Moreno Jr., entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the age of 72. Mr. Moreno was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. He graduated from Martin High School in 1959. He excelled in sports all his life especially baseball and basketball. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his athletic career. He was a competitor from his younger days when he played basketball at the boys club, where he was part of the 1957 Texas State Champion Basketball Team. He was also part of the 1959 Martin High School State Runner-Up Team that was inducted into the Laredo Latin American Sports Hall Fame in 1998. But Joe, "El Torito" Moreno Jr. was mostly known for baseball, as his father was before him. His father, Jose "Pepe" Moreno Sr. "A pioneer in Laredo Little League" was inducted in the Laredo Latin American Sports Hall of Fame as Sports Man of the Year in 1979. Joe Jr. was a fierce competitor on the baseball field but mostly known as a great pitcher with a paralyizing fastball. He played baseball for Martin High School then preceded to play in college at Allen Military Academy and Pan American College on Baseball Scholarships. He also played basketball at Pan American College, After college he played Semi-Pro Baseball with some of the Nuevo Laredo Leagues and was offered a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirate. Joe didn't go to the tryout because he said he had a shoulder injury but if you ask his friends they will tell you he didn't want to leave his new found love, his wife Rosario, in which he married with her raised all his children in and around Laredo. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosario M. Moreno. Parents, Jose "Pepe" Moreno and Ofilia S. Moreno. Parents-in-Law, Filomeno and Elena Martinez. He is survived by his children, Jose "Joe" M. Moreno III, Daughter-in-Law, Raquel Moreno, Mark (Sylvia) Moreno and Melissa (Mario) Jimenez. 7 grandchildren, Matthew Moreno, Kristina Moreno, Tracey Moreno, Mark Moreno Jr., Marlon Jimenez, Memphis Jimenez and Natalynne Jimenez. Brother & Sister, Nydia (John) Milne and William (Yolanda) Moreno. Sisters-in-Law, Lydia Ugarte and Rosa Martinez. Brother-in-Law, Joe (Ana) Martinez. Also surviving him are nephews, nieces, numerous other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 4 to 9 p.m. and a Vigil of the Deceased will be held at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez-Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012 departing from the funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Mother Cabrini Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will then follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
