Obituary

Jose E. Zapata, a lifelong son of Laredo, passed away in Laredo, Texas, on October 23, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on May 11, 1936, in Laredo, and throughout his long life remained deeply rooted in the community that shaped him.

Mr. Zapata was a graduate of Laredo Martin High School, Class of 1956. During his school years, he was a member of the R.O.T.C. Cadet program and was recognized as a marksman, reflecting the discipline and dedication that would remain part of his character throughout his life.

He built a life defined by steady work, devotion to family, and quiet perseverance. He was employed as an office clerk with Laredo Creamery, later worked for numerous years with Hygeia Milk Dairy Company, and went on to serve with Webb County Headstart until his retirement at the age of 80. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus for more than seven years, a commitment that reflected his spirit of fellowship and service. Through those years, he also cared faithfully for his ailing wife, a testament to the depth of his loyalty and love.

Beyond his work, Jose found joy in the familiar pleasures that brought warmth to everyday life. He loved listening to old 50’s music in both English and Spanish, songs that no doubt carried memories and comfort across the years. He especially treasured time spent with his only grandson, whom he adored. Saturdays often found him enjoying college football, with a special enthusiasm for the Aggies.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 64 years of marriage, Matilda Martinez Zapata, by his parents, Pedro Zapata and Teodota Zapata of Laredo, and by his siblings, Cecilia (Ernesto+) Sanchez of Laredo, Catalina (Alberto) Brewster of Laredo, Socorro (William) Reyor of Florida and by Antonio Zapata+.

He leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory forward with pride and affection. He is survived by his only son, Jose E. Zapata Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Carmen Zapata; and his beloved grandson, Andres Zapata, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nephews, other relatives, and many friends, all of whom were touched by his presence and will remember him with enduring fondness.

Jose E. Zapata’s life was one of constancy, care, and love for those closest to him. He will be remembered for his years of hard work, his devotion to family, and the simple joys that filled his days. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Hernandez, Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St and San Bernardo Ave. A Vigil of the Deceased will be officiated at 7:00 p.m. that evening in the funeral home chapel. Funeral Services will begin departing the funeral home in procession at 8:30 a.m. from the funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. at San Luis Rey Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will follow in the family plot at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
