Joseph Harry Castellano entered eternal rest in San Antonio, Texas on August 28, 2016 at the age of 78. Born in Laredo, Texas to David and Jane Castellano on March 13, 1938; he now reunites with his parents and brothers, William Albert and Jesse Castellano Sr.; sister-in-law Gloria Castellano and brother-in-law Reymundo Gonzalez Sr. He is survived by his son Phillip (Lisa) Moore; siblings: David, Benito, Jane, Josie (Eduardo) Lozano; sister-in-law Edna Castellano; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Joseph took great pride in educating others in music so much that he made a life career out of it. He began his musical career at a young age, beginning in the seventh grade under Chuck Hayes. He graduated from Martin High School in Laredo, Texas with one of the first John Phillip Sousa Awards. After graduation he attended the University of Texas to further his education and obtained his Bachelor's degree in Music in 1965. Striving for the best, Joseph continued his education at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas, and obtained his Master of Science in Music Education. He had a prestige work history educating thousands of children beginning in Halletsville ISD from 1965-1968 as a Director of Bands, Industrial High School 1968-1990 as Director of Bands, Highlands High School 1990-2000 as Assistant Band Director/Jazz Band Director. Professionally he ventured through many bands beginning with Valdez Brothers Ochestra of Laredo, Texas, playing the alto, tenor and baritone saxes from 1953-1962; Luis Arcaraz Orchestra of Los Angeles, California, playing the alto, tenor, baritone saxes and clarinet from 1959-1961; Victoria Symphony Orchestra of Victoria, Texas, playing the clarinet, bass clarinet, and alto sax from 1970-1980; River City Big Band of San Antonio, Texas, playing the tenor sax from 2002-2016. Honorably he served his country in the United States Army; professionally he was honorably recognized for his many UIL accomplishments and workmanship. He earned 4th and 6th place at the UIL State Marching Contest, UIL 1st Division Trophy 22 times in Sight-reading contests, UIL 1st Division Trophy 21 times in Marching and Concert Contests, University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes Trophy 20 times, Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band Award (2x) for "Best Band" in State, Elected to the Texas Bandmaster Association's Hall of Fame in 2004 and named as a Pioneer Band Director of South Texas by the Texas Bandmaster Association in 2010. He also served as a member of the UIL State Advisor committee, UIL Selection Committee for State-Wide Sight-reading Music, TMEA Convention program panel on "How to Sight-read" and "Honor Band Director's Methods," TMEA Honor Band Committee to make changes to the Honor Band Process, TMEA's Honor Band Selection judging panel for district, area and state, TMEA's district, region, area, and state auditions, conducted clinics with individual cities and summer band camps, and served as adjudicator for UIL marching contests, solo ensemble contests and invitational contests. He brought his career to an end in 2016 as a Fine Arts Instrumental Coordinator for the San Antonio Independent School District. Joseph lived a life full of love, education, mentoring, happiness, and fond memories that will forever be cherished. His legacy continues on through the thousands of lives he touched with his passion for music. His presence will be missed dearly by all who knew him. The family will be receiving guests at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 515 North Main Avenue, on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. Services will continue in Laredo, Texas, on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Hernandez & Lopez Funeral Home, 800 Boston, with a 5:00 p.m. visitation and 7:00 p.m. Rosary. A procession will depart the funeral home on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate a 10:00 Mass of Resurrection at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1602 Garcia St. Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
