Obituary

Macaria Garza Cantu

Mrs. Macaria Cantu was born on March 10, 1934 in Brundage Texas. Macaria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, friend who left this world peacefully at the age of 90 on January 6, 2025 at her home residence, surrounded by her loved ones.

Her childhood years were spent in Cienega de Flores, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.  At the tender age of 13, she moved to Chicago to live with her oldest sister, Julia Garza. At 19, she married Zaragoza Cantu-Escamilla and together had four children. She enjoyed selling Avon. Her favorite pastimes were sewing, gardening, and playing loteria with her friends and family. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and taking care of her grandchildren.

Mrs Macaria is preceded in death by the love of her life, Zaragoza Cantu-Escamilla.

Children: Monica, Zaragoza Jr. Juan

Granddaughter: Esmeralda Cantu Gonzalez

Her parents, Juan Garza and Maria Elizondo,

Siblings: Bernardino Fidel, Julia, Guadalupe, Maria de Jesus (Maruca)

Son in Law: Jose Rosalio (Chalio) Cuevas

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and many friends.

She is survived by her brother Juan Garza, daughter, Margarita Cantu Martinez son in law, Juan Antonio Martinez Jr. and daughter in law Marilu Cantu:

Grandchildren, Luis Fernando Cuevas, Marilu Cantu, Javier Alberto Cuevas, Sanjuanita Cantu, Melissa Cuevas, Margarita Cantu-Barrios, Daniela Cantu-Chapa, Juan Antonio Martinez III, Sarah Alyssa Martinez.

Great grandchildren: Luis Fernando Cuevas Jr, Jose Cuevas, David Cuevas, Arturo Guerrero, Martin Guerrero, Genesis Guerrero ,Javier Cuevas, Katherine Gonzalez, and Jazmine Gonzalez, Eli Barrios, and Ian Barrios

Great-great grandchildren: Luis Fernando Cuevas III, Cecilia Azenneth Cuevas, Anna Cataleya Cuevas, Sebastian Torres and Gerardo Torres

PALLBEARERS WERE: Juan Antonio Martinez III, Luis Fernando Cuevas, Javier Cuevas, Luis Fernando Cuevas Jr, Jose Cuevas, David Cuevas, Arturo Guerrero and Javier Alberto Cuevas.

The family would like to extend their gratitude for their endless care to all the staff at Holy Savior Hospice, Star of Life Home Health (Irma Benavides), Dr. Zuniga Goldwater, Nurse Practioner, Jesus Ramirez, Las Palmas Home Health (Ana Laura Salinas, Cindy Flores), De Fe Home Health Providers (Vanessa Ramos and Mr. Cerda), Providers: Bertha Serna, Margarita Maldonado, Sra. Mary Angulo, Cruzita Gonzalez, and Sra. Lucia Gonzalez. Laredo Medical Center, 2D Floor Staff (Dr. Limandri, Nurses (Joseph, Jose, Julio, and Laura), CNAs (Mextli and Juanita). Thank you to the Laredo Medical Center ICU Department (Dr. Marcelo Gutierrez, Dr. Gonzalez, and staff). Macaria will be deeply missed.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 10, 2025 departing from the Hernandez, Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. and San Bernardo Ave. A Liturgy of the word was held in the funeral home chapel before committal services and interment which followed at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

PALLBEARERS WERE: Juan Antonio Martinez III, Luis Fernando Cuevas, Javier Cuevas, Luis Fernando Cuevas JR., Jose Cuevas, David Cuevas, Arturo Guerrero and Javier Alberto Cuevas.

HONORARY PALLBEARERS: Juan Antonio Martinez JR., Juan Garza, Ele Barrios and Ian Barrios.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hernandez, Lopez and Sons Funeral Chapels.
