Obituary

MARIO S. MARTINEZ FEBRUARY 10, 1932 - APRIL 3, 2015 Mario Martinez, Sr., 83, entered into eternal rest, Friday, April 3, 2015 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 10, 1932. He was a resident of Laredo, all his life. He was also a security guard for several years. He worked for the City of Laredo as a Building Inspector then retired after twenty years. Then he was in the National Guard for eight years then joined the Army for fourteen years. Martinez, proudly served is country during the Korean War for three years (Pork Chop Hill). He helped many people in different ways and was also a volunteer driver for the Veterans Affairs of Laredo, to the San Antonio/Valley areas. He then received his full Honor discharge (100%) due to severe accident that occurred June 14, 1987. Martinez was thrashed against steel during the Texas Army National Guard 49th Armored Division combat-readiness exercises called "Starburst 87" in Fort Hood, TX. Martinez had a long life battle but he was a very brave and strong "Hero". He loved his garden and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He would always look forward to the parades and Veteran gatherings to spend great times with friends and family. He will join his family in heaven, his father, Pedro Martinez, Mother, Francisca S. Martinez, sisters, Bodilia M. Dominguez, Maria Munoz, Lilia Martinez, Brothers, Ricardo Martinez, Guadalupe "Lupe" Martinez. His survived by his loving wife, Alicia Martinez, of 56 years, sons and daughters, Mario (Rose) Martinez, Jr., Estela (Luis) Palacios, Sylvia (Eddie) Martinez, Hilda (Javier) Castillo, Araceli (Luis) Rodriguez, Sergio (Aurora) Martinez, Beatriz (Santiago) Flores, Nora (David) Garcia, and Margarita (Isidoro) Gallegos, III. Thirty one grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren left with fond memories of their beloved grandfather. Also surviving him are other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015 from 4 to 9 p.m. and a Vigil of the Deceased at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez, Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin at 8:05 a.m. on Tuesday, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 departing from the funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. at San Luis Rey Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will then follow in the Veteran's Section of the Laredo City Cemetery.
