Olga Lucila Barreda Alvarado
Olga Lucila Barreda Alvarado, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Las Alturas Nursing & Transitional Care in Laredo with her family by her side.
Olga was born on February 8, 1942 in Laredo to Ramon L. Barreda and Olga Ramirez. She graduated from Martin High School Class in 1961 and was a member of "La Banda Del Animo." From 1964-1967, Olga worked at then Southwestern Bell Telephone. Olga married the love of her life Agustin Alvarado, Jr. on April 16, 1966. The two were each other's lifelong companions and friends. They were blessed with four children: Agustin, III; Alberto Jaime (Brisa) Alvarado; Christina Lamar (Martin) Alarcon; and Marco Antonio (Irma) Alvarado. They have 11 beautiful grandchildren: Alexandra (Robert) Gutierrez; Andrea Alarcon; Matthew Alvarado; Lauren Alvarado; Kayla Alvarado, Liana Alvarado; Alina Alvarado; Alisa Alvarado; Nicholas Alvarado; Daniel Alvarado; and Cristian Alvarado; and two great grandchildren: Matthew and Avery Gutierrez.
Olga was a devout Catholic and life-long learner. She was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church where she served as a eucharistic minister. Nearly 30 years after receiving her high school diploma, she returned to the classroom, earning an Associate of Arts degree in 1990 from then Laredo Junior College. Olga was a student of the arts. She loved to draw and paint, and her home is adorned with many of her beautiful creations. Olga loved music. Whether it was listening to her favorite station on the radio—KHOY, taking piano lessons in her "golden" years, or watching her favorite videos on YouTube, Olga's love of music and the arts was influenced by her late maternal grandmother, Herlinda Bruni Ramirez.
Olga will be remembered for her happy demeanor, peaceful disposition, and beautiful spirit. She is survived by her loving husband Agustin Alvarado Jr., brother Ernesto Barreda and was preceded in death by her son Agustin, III, her parents Ramon and Olga Barreda, her brother Ramon Barreda, Jr., and her sisters Sylvia Hale, and Cynthia Barreda.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm on Monday, October 9, 2023 and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez, Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. and San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin departing the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will follow at the Laredo City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Alberto Alvarado, Marty Alarcon, Marco Alvarado, Nicholas Alvarado, Daniel Alvarado, Cristian Alvarado, David Alvarado and Roberto Gutierrez.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that masses be offered in Olga's name.
