Obituary

OLIVIA D. RODRIGUEZ
October 02, 1921 – August 17, 2016
On August 17, 2016, our beloved mother, Olivia D. Rodriguez went peacefully into the night to join her heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ in paradise. She is now spiritually reunited with her husband of 60 years, Raul T. Rodriguez, and her 2 sons, Raul T. Rodriguez Jr. and Eduardo Daniel Rodriguez. Mom's graduation into God's heavenly kingdom occurred on Rene's, her beloved  son's birthday, which was embraced  by the family as the ultimate gift of love. Her parents, Lazaro V. Dovalina and Maria G. Dovalina, predeceased her. She is survived by her sons and daughters, Alfonso Rodriguez, Rene D. Rodriguez, Ricardo "Bevo" Rodriguez, Elsa Delia Rodriguez, Olivia (Olee) Rodriguez (Sal Narvaez) and Antonio G. Rodriguez, 3 grandchildren, John Rodriguez, Gilbert Rodriguez and Daniel Raul Rodriguez, and 2 great-grandchildren, Tiani and Beyonce Rodriguez. She is also survived by 2 elder siblings, Alfredo Dovalina, who recently turned 101 years old: Alicia Salinas, 99 and her younger sister, Esther Moreno of Mercedes, Texas, 92, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Rodriguez is a direct descendant of the founder of Laredo, Texas, Don Tomas Sanchez and Don Jose Vasquez Borrego, who established the first permanent settlement at the site of the present Dolores in South Texas, on August 24, 1750. Her Maternal grandparents,  Don Dario Gonzalez and Celedonia de La Garza, Daughter of Lazaro de La Garza, who was the first elected County Judge of Webb County, eventually settled and lived at Las Tiendas Ranch. Don Dario Gonzalez was elected Sheriff of Webb County in 1872, where he served in that capacity for thirteen years. He founded and was the leader of the Guarache-Gonzalista Reform party when the Election Riot of 1886 occurred between Los Guaraches and Las Botas that claimed many lives. He also served as Alderman from 1879 to 1882.
Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Mom was proud and often spoke humbly about her upbringing in a large family. During the Second World War, she waited patiently for her husband's return from the Pacific Theater where he served with patriotism and valor from 1943-45. They married on August 4, 1947 and for the following 13 years, 6 sons and 2 daughters were born of their union. She was a loving, caring and compassionate mother who always cheered for the underdog and was always willing to help others in their time of need. As a homemaker and avid gardener, she was the glue that kept the family together with her display of harmony, peace and love.
She enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada and took many trips there with her husband throughout the years commencing in 1987. In 1989, she journeyed with her nephew, Gilbert to Germany, Belgium, Austria and France to visit her son, Eduardo who was serving in the United States Air Force at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. She fulfilled her wish to visit Landstuhl, Germany where her son Raul, Jr., had passed away in 1968 while serving in the United States Army. She also travelled extensively to Mexico and enjoyed many trips with family and friends. She particularly enjoyed visiting Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, where she lived for 3 years, from 1949-1952, during the Aftosa Program where her husband was stationed temporarily with the USDA as an inspector. Two of her children, Rene and Ricardo were conceived there during her husband's assignment, but were born in Laredo. During her trips to Mexico she gave generously to the churches and orphanages to expand the ministry and assist the poor. A great pastime of hers was traveling to the family ranch as often as she could to celebrate Easter and other significant holidays and birthdays with her husband and children as well as cheering enthusiastically for her favorite teams, the San Antonio Spurs and the Texas Rangers.
Our mother leaves a legacy of living a life of humility, truth, justice and righteousness. That is the way she lived her life in fulfillment of Proverbs, Chapter 31, The Wife of Noble Character. We are totally indebted to our sister, Olivia (Olee) who cared for both Dad and Mom during the twilight years. She wholeheartedly and unconditionally displayed love and devotion for the health and welfare of our parents. The family wishes to convey our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Idelfonzo Flores, and the many nurses, speech therapists and health care providers from the Laredo Medical Center and Laredo Nursing & Rehabilitation who showed our Mom a loving and caring compassion for her well-being.
