PAULINE C. GARZA Pauline Connell Garza was called home by her Heavenly Father on Monday, July 9, 2012, at the age of 94. Pauline was born in New York City on October 25, 1917 and grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. After graduating from Dwight High School, she studied art at The New York School of Design for two years and then worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance in Manhattan for several years before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico where her parents had chosen to live upon their retirement. During World War II, she responded to the critical shortage of nurses by joining The U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps and received her training at The Regina School of Nursing in Albuquerque. During a temporary nursing assignment to Santa Fe in 1946, two of the most significant events in Pauline's life occurred. The first was meeting the love of her life, Zaragoza Garza, who at the time was a returning World War II soldier recovering from a service-related illness at the U.S. Army hospital in Santa Fe. The second event which greatly impacted her entire life was her conversion to the Catholic Faith. She received instructions and was baptized at The Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe. Pauline and Zaragoza were married on March 2, 1947 and resided in Laredo for the rest of their lives. During various periods in the 1950's and 60's, she worked at Mercy Hospital, both the original downtown and the Galveston Street locations. Throughout her life, until the very end, what was of utmost importance to Pauline was to live out her faith each and every day. All that she did was guided by her great desire to put into practice what her Catholic faith inspired her to do. She continually sought to grow in her understanding of church doctrine and the writings of the great Saints. Pauline gave generously of her time and resources to those in need, as well as to organizations that sought to promote and uphold the teachings of the church. From the beginnings of San Luis Rey Church, Pauline has been an active and dedicated parishioner. She participated daily in The Eucharistic celebrations, was a member of The Guadalupanas and other parish organizations, and served as an assistant in the parish rectory for a number of years. The San Luis Rey community was truly like a family to her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nieves Zaragoza Garza, and by her brother, Eugene Stratton Taft Connell. She is survived by her children: Placida (Mario) Narvaez of Laredo, Eugenio Zaragoza (Dolores) Garza and Mary Elizabeth Garza of San Antonio, Texas, Catherine (Rogelio) Rodriguez and Regina (Rafael) Ramirez of Laredo; her grandchildren: Celina (Joe) Gonzalez, Mario Narvaez Jr., Isabel (Manuel) Harrell, Monica Narvaez, Javier (Carol) Narvaez, Joseph Garza, Dominic (Marla) Garza, Francis (Anna) Garza, Stella (Michael) Martinez, Cecilia Pauline Garza; her great-grandchildren: Alessandra, Daniela, and Erik Mata; Matthew and Pauline Harrell; Lauren, Julia, James, Sarah and Nathan Martinez; Amber and Madison Martinez; William and Olivia Garza; KateLynn Rodriguez and Isaac Narvaez.
