Obituary

PEDRO MARTIN SALINAS Pedro M. Salinas passed away at home surrounded by his family on Saturday March 4, 2012 at the age of 89. Pedro was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. He was a was a veteran of World War II in which he served with the United States Army 2126th Army Air Force Base Unit from 1942 until his discharge in 1946. He held the rank of Corporal and was decorated with the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Ribbon with 1 service stripe. After his tour of duty he perused employment with the U.S. Customs and was stationed in Eagle Pass for over 17 years. After his retirement with the U.S. Customs he moved back to Laredo and became very active with his community. He was a member and one time president of the A.A.R.P, He was also a member of the Rondalla and on his free time he helped entertain the residents at the local nursing homes or anyone interested in just listening to traditional Mexican songs from the past. He also taught Defensive Driving Classes and Volunteered as a Tax Preparer from time to time. Pedro was an active parishioner with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He will always be remembered for his love of his family, his strong work ethics, his sense of humor and willingness to always assist others. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends and many who had come to know him. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years of marriage Lucia Salinas who passed away on August 21, 2010, by his parents Vicente and Eugenia G. Salinas, by his brothers and sisters Zulema Martinez, Antonia Sanchez, Vicente Salinas, Fidel Salinas and Miguel Salinas. He is survived by his four children Pedro M. (Sara J.) Salinas, Ramiro (Mirtha Isabel) Salinas, Graciela Salinas and Rosalva (Jose) Barrientos. His grandchildren: Karen (J.J.) Buitron, Christine (Hector) Garcia, Josue Benjamin Salinas, Michelle (Taylor) Minshal, Michael (Leticia) Collett, Cynthia (David) Mendoza and Marissa Barrientos. (9) great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are nephews, nieces, numerous other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. , A Rosary given by the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Daughters of the Americas # 1989 will be held at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil of the Deceased will be recited at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez-Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin departing at 8:05 a.m. Friday morning , March 9, 2012 from the funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will then follow in the Veteran's Section of the Laredo City Cemetery.
