Obituary

Raul was as simple, respectful courteous a man as you would find who lived the simple life without flair. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved the sun and wind on his face from sunrise to sunset. Hunting and fishing were his favorites and was one of few Texas licensed trappers in this area. His passion was cattle work and horses since his early teens. Rather than graduating from high school, he would much rather skip class for days to go to Marshall DeSpain's ranch and work cattle and goats. The latter is where he earned his "Honorary Master's Degree" in cattle ranching. From there he graduated from the "School of Hard Knocks" where learned living a responsible and noble life of heavy equipment operation. He did many jobs at different oil and gas drilling operations in South Texas. He was also a welder and was his own back yard mechanic repairing his personal vehicles. Raul served his country proudly and honorably as every young man of the time was expected. He was stationed in Panama where he was exposed to early chemical experiments to eradicate jungles, the precursor to Agent orange, and later transferred to Fort Ord, California from where he was released from active service. He returned to the love of his life, which was cattle. Raul was known by other names depending on the place and with whom he was sharing the moment. These were "Rule" and "El Lobo". The reason for "El Lobo" is a bit obscured. The story goes that the latter was christened upon him by his best friends of the time who were Marshall DeSpain, Joe Sepulveda, (now JP) Oscar Martinez, Fred Winch and so on down the line. Maybe he would howl at the moon at night or he would chase the goats. Whatever, it is interesting to hear and ponder. He succumbed to Parkinson's, which he developed at age 55. He courageously battled the disease for 18 years. Rule leaves behind a legacy of love of family, unselfish devotion for his friends and neighbors, hard, honest work and endless love for God.
