Rene R.
Benavides
April 24, 2023
Rene R. Benavides, 72, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023.
Born in Hebbronville, Rene was a lifelong resident of Laredo.
Rene, El Better, as he was affectionately called by many, will forever be remembered for the undeniable, deep, unconditional love he had for those he loved the most, as he was a fierce protector of his closest family and friends. He was a person of loyalty and pride when it came to all those he considered family. He was a bright light that fueled the ones he loved with optimism and unconditional support. He will be missed for his humor, his positivity, and his never ending will to keep fighting. The health and happiness of his family and friends were always the core of his prayers. With sincerest gratitude, his family members feel so blessed to have had such an amazing and impactful person such as him in their lives.
Not only was he a dedicated family man but also an integral pillar in the Laredo automotive community. The automotive community lost one its most loved and adored figures. For over 42 years his shop, Better Automatics, has been one of the places any person from any walk of life could go to either get their vehicle repaired, get advice, or just to have a conversation. He treated everyone as if they were family and never turned anyone away. On weekends you could hear the roar of his classic cars as he would take them out for a spin or to the community car shows. You could just mention the name Rene or El Better at a car show and almost anyone would be able to recognize the name right away and have a funny story to tell.
He will be greatly missed, and his memory will live on.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberto Benavides and Rita G. Benavides.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Belinda Benavides. Children, Cynthia (Gerardo) Cantu, Rene Benavides Jr. (Diana Munoz) and Rita (Cutberto) Martinez. Grandchildren Gerardo (Ana) Cantu Jr., Guadalupe Cantu, Mathew Benavides, Madison Benavides, Rene Benavides III and Aiden Martinez. Great granddaughter, Belinda A. Cantu. Siblings, Laura (Jose+) Castillo, Candelario (Norma) Benavides, Rosa (Noah+) Camacho, Mario (Olinda) Benavides, Leticia (Carlos) Sanchez and Hector (Raquel) Benavides. He is also survived by many other relatives and many friends.
The Family has made arrangements for a private service.
