SOFIA CARDENAS DE ZAVALA 02/24/1940 - 07/12/2012 Sofia Cardenas De Zavala, 72, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2012 in Laredo, Texas. Mrs. Zavala was a very active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Laredo. She was a member of the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass Choir and also was a former Catechist in the parish having ministered for a number of years . She was active also in the Mary Help of Christians/Maria Auxiliadora Prayer Group. She was preceded in death her daughter, Santos Zavala. Parents, Gonzalo and Teresa Cardenas. Sisters, Hermelinda Vasquez and Ana Maria Gomez. Mother-in-Law, Maria De La Luz Sanchez Zavala. Sister-in-Law, Santos Lara. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years of marriage, Juan M. Zavala Sr. Children, San Juana Guadalupe Z. (Jose) Hernandez, Juan Manuel, USMC (Alicia) Zavala, Maria Del Rosario (Luis) Estevis, Niria Alma (Rolando) Estevis, Jesus Martin (Leticia) Zavala, Norberto (Martha) Zavala and Luis Eduardo Zavala. 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Siblings, Juan Gonzalo (Juani) Cardenas, Rogelio (Mari) Cardenas, Graciela Cardenas De Farias, Adalberto (Yvonne) Cardenas and Miguel Angel (Dora) Cardenas. Also surviving her are numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 4 to 9 p.m. and a Vigil of the Deceased will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Hernandez Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San Bernardo Ave. Funeral services will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 departing from funeral home chapel. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Committal services and interment will then follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
